Upon reading the article I just knew it had to be written by a man. It all sounds so logical and can't wait to see what is opinion is once he actually experiences being the parent of a stubborn and strong willed child. Good Luck and hold on to all your good reasoning. You do give me hope that some day my kids will appreciate me.

These are some great ideas for engaging kids with reading. Your idea about asking a child to act out something they just heard sounds like a great way to bring reading to life. As you note in your opening sentence, we seem to have forgotten that reading is a family activitiy. We created the Reading Tub as a way to "bring reading home for families" and help them find great books that meet their kids' areas of interest (and don't involve media tie-ins!).

We read everyday! My kiddos love it and they learn way more from books than "preschool on TV." They also see me reading my book club books in the evening and my hubby and I reading our bible at night.

Finally! someone writes about this. I have a grown step-daughter but when she was a child, my husband would applaud everything she did -- including mediocrity and downright poor performance. I could see in her eyes she was not deserving of this praise. I wondered then, and still do, if the parent is filling a personal emotional need over attempting to build self-esteem in the child. Is the parent unable or afraid of being honest while encouraging? Are parents now too unsure of themselves to guide and direct -- so unsure they can't recognize true accomplishments? Does it make the child angry as if to say to the parent, "Are you really paying attention?" I wonder.

Your write up is really true. Sometimes we undermine the capacity of our children, yet we do this unconsciously.

I really think I agree with you on "Give appropriate praise".

Frankly speaking many Parents have continually sent the wrong message to their kids without even knowing it.

It would be better to tell your kid,"I love you for the way you did ......" than just a "you're great every time".

I'm not sure how and when it started, but my son, now 6 yo, is starting to bully his classmate and his own brother. What can I do to help him understand that bullying is wrong... tried talking to him, but he still do it...yesterday, his teacher asked him to do his homework, then he beats his teacher's hand. I think this is not acceptable... so we scolded him and told him that is wrong.. he asked me to "shut up and go away" this is really hurt...

very true. as a mom, we need to be mentally, emotionally & physically strong & fit in any situations. the kids are specially very depending on mom & they always look at what mom does.if a mom care about herself, she shows self-respect, and the kids will have more respects towards their mom & they understand, mom is so precious!
